You’ve probably asked yourself, “Do I need to include references on my CV?” The simple answer,  not anymore. It’s a bit outdated to list them upfront and most employers don’t expect it. So, ditch the references section and use that space for what really matters, showcasing your talents and experience.

Why skip the references section?

Employers tend to ask for references only after they’ve decided you're a strong candidate, usually toward the end of the hiring process. Listing them early on just takes up room that could be better used to highlight your accomplishments and make your CV stand out.

What should you do instead?

A neat, professional line like "References available upon request" will do the trick. It’s an easy way to signal you’ve got them ready without cluttering your CV. This also gives you the advantage of controlling when and how your references are shared.

Be selective with your referees

When the time comes to provide references, be thoughtful about who you choose. Opt for former managers, colleagues, or mentors who can genuinely vouch for your skills and character. And always, always ask their permission before handing over their details to potential employers.

In short, save your CV space for the good stuff, your achievements and experience. References can wait until you're one step closer to landing that job!
